The Distribution of Dark Matter in the Milky Way Galaxy
نویسنده
چکیده
A wealth of recent observational studies shows the dark matter in the Milky Way to have the following fundamental properties: 1) there is no detectable dark matter associated with the Galactic disk – the dark matter is distributed in a purely halo distribution with local volume density near the Earth ≈ 0.3GeV/cc ≡ 0.01M⊙pc; 2) The stellar mass function is both universal and convergent at low masses – there is no significant very low luminosity baryonic dark matter associated with stellar light. Fundamentally, dark mass does NOT follow light. 3) The smallest scale length on which dark matter is clustered is in the Milky Way’s satellite dwarf Spheroidal galaxies, where dark matter has a characteristic length scale ∼ 1kpc ≡ 10m and mass density ∼ 0.05M⊙pc ≡ 1.5GeV/cc.

The Milky Way Tomography with Sdss. v. Mapping the Dark Matter Halo
We present robust constraints from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) on the shape and distribution of the dark matter halo within the Milky Way (MW). Using the number density distribution and kinematics of SDSS halo stars, we probe the dark matter distribution to heliocentric distances exceeding ∼10 kpc and galactocentric distances exceeding ∼20 kpc. Our analysis utilizes Jeans equations to g...
متن کاملWay dwarf satellites enter the halo as a group ?
The dwarf satellite galaxies in the Local Group are generally considered to be hosted in dark matter subhalos that survived the disruptive processes during infall onto their host halos. It has recently been argued that if the majority of satellites entered the Milky Way halo in a group rather than individually, this could explain the spatial and dynamical peculiarities of its satellite distribu...
متن کاملDogs That Don't Bark? (the Tale of Baryonic Dark Matter in Galaxies)
This article reviews the nature and distribution of baryonic dark matter in galaxies , with a particular emphasis on the Milky Way. The microlensing experiments towards the Large Magellanic Clouds, the Andromeda Galaxy and the bulge provide evidence on the characteristic mass and abundance of baryonic dark matter, as do direct searches for local counterparts of dark halo populations.

The distribution of shapes of galaxies' dark halos provides a basic test for models of galaxy formation. To-date, few dark halo shapes have been measured, and the results of different methods appear contradictory. Here, we add to the sample of measured shapes by calculating the flattening of the Milky Way's dark halo based on the manner in which the gas layer in the Galaxy flares with radius. W...
متن کاملThe Dark Disk of the Milky Way
Massive satellite accretions onto early galactic disks can lead to the deposition of dark matter in disk-like configurations that co-rotate with the galaxy. This phenomenon has potentially dramatic consequences for dark matter detection experiments. We utilize focused, high-resolution simulations of accretion events onto disks designed to be Galaxy analogues, and compare the resultant disks to ...
